“Morning,” I smile at Bakerman all fresh to start a new week. “I think I’m understanding what the ‘4h work week’ is about…”
I pause a moment as he hands me my parcels of fresh bread and buns. “And it wasn’t what I thought when I started reading. Write a book promising riches and fortune and you’ve made a bestseller. Feed people their dreams. Let them think they can have their cake and eat it. And yes you can travel the world in all freedom but you’ve got to let go of your possessions. Less is more. Stay in hostels and travel cheap. There’s something in the travel cheap part…”
Bakerman nods at me listening intently. Encouraged by his fixed gaze I continue to recount my findings from Tim Ferriss’ best seller: “But still, it’s not filthy rich and travel in luxury. Stop pretending you’re busy with futilities. Get your work done – what you have to do – and then do the things that make you happy. But do things. Passive income remains the elusive pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Still don’t know how to do it. But Tim Ferris does. We’re all buying his book and downloading his podcasts. And Deepak Chopra. And Oprah Winfrey…”
I feel a pang of jealousy but also a sense of excitement. As if I feel I have it in me to reach this level too. “Got to say I am really enjoying this book,” I conclude.
“The self-help market is in the billions,” Bakerman confirms what I already suspected. “Most of what they say is junk. Timing is everything. Not everyone is meant to be rich. Can you copy Oprah? Will her way work for you? Here is a trick you can use. Find out what service people need and provide that service in a manner that is so well done and you will be sought after.”
“Hmmm no, I am just as scared of the camera as I am of the phone,” I vehemently shake my head. “So I’m no Oprah. Providing a service in a certain manner… Can you give an example how in my current businesses?”
“What are the key things that are asked about often?” Bakerman coaxes me to think outside of the box. “Perhaps the solution being offered today is not as good as it will be tomorrow. Investigate screen printing. How it’s done and on what types of fabric can it be done on. Guys today are more feminine than girls are. They want to make fashion statements. Socks need to be colourful or patterned. Can’t be hard to do that and sell via Facebook and Instagram.”
Stagnation is never a good place to be. Yet change provokes feelings of discomfort, fear or pain. When you experience change in your life, learn to control your response and reaction to the changes that are happening. When you stop resisting change, and instead regard it as an opportunity to grow, you’ll find yourself empowered in the face of it. Fostering a sense of optimism, enthusiasm and flexibility will greatly aid you here.
